On Tuesday, the Nicholas Global Equity and Income ETF (GIAX ) began trading on the NYSE Arca.
GIAX is an actively managed fund that aims to provide current income, along with capital appreciation. The fund operates with a net expense ratio of 0.97%. ‘
In order to fulfil its investment objective, GIAX utilizes a two-pronged strategy. This involves holding shares in broad passive ETFs that generate exposure to global equity securities. The second half of the strategy sees GIAX selling daily index call spreads on one or more equity indices in the United States.
Option Income
The primary driver for the fund’s income component will come from selling the daily index call spreads. Per the fund prospectus, GIAX utilizes U.S. indices due to higher liquidity and pricing opportunities.
Among call options, GIAX focuses operations on options that have an expiration of one month or less. While the call options can generate current income, they do limit GIAX’s potential participation if the index gains value.
Global Upside
Through investing in ETFs tied to global equity markets, GIAX can access upside appreciation from a wide variety of equities. To make this strategy work, the fund holds roughly four to six index ETFs. These funds are relatively equally weighed.
Among the index ETFs chosen for inclusion, at least two funds will focus efforts on tracking foreign security performance. Should the fund managers deem it a more cost-effective strategy, GIAX may instead utilize a representative sampling strategy to invest in an ETF’s assets in lieu of the fund itself.
As an additional means, the fund holds either cash or short-term U.S. Treasury securities. The Treasury securities are used as collateral for the call strategy while providing additional income for the fund.
Investors can utilize GIAX as an income-generating option to gain monthly revenue regardless of how an index may perform. This comes with the added benefit of capital appreciation through an equity portfolio. This makes GIAX a valuable investment option for those who seek monthly income while bolstering global equity exposure.
